Electrochromic Sunglasses

Our Unique Technology in a Nutshell.

Construction:

  • Thin (< 0.5 mm), flexible, hermetically sealed construction.
  • Variable area: Virtually any shape or size possible, as easy as cutting with scissors. 1 cm^2 to 1 m^2 (custom tailorable).
  • Based on Conducting Polymer as the electrochromic: diphenyl amine/aniline copolymer.
  • Extreme physical durability: Mylar (polyester) substrates.
  • Easily affixable over prescription lenses but can also be used as stand-alone sunglasses.
  • Available as stand-alone sunglasses, as clip-on, or as paste-on.
    Very light weight: about 0.08 g/cm^2 (800 g/m^2)

Spectral and Electrochromic Properties:

  • Extremely high light/dark contrast: > 40% Transmission variation throughout the Visible spectral region.
  • Extremely broad-band response: Flat from 400 nm (violet region) through 700 nm (red) to 1100 nm (near-IR).
  • Attractive colors: From nearly transparent, light greenish yellow through light green through dark green through green-black.
  • Any color from above, and any in between, i.e. any electrochromic state, can be “dialed” through the Controller.

Switching and Durability
Very fast switching and long lasting:

  • Switching times < 5 s using Controller. [Still under refinement, with expected switching times of < 2 s within six months].
  • Cyclabilities > 10^4 cycles for all devices. Tailorable to 10^5 cycles in select devices.
  • Operating temperature: -35 degrees C to + 60 degrees C.
  • Durability: -50 degrees C to +70 degrees C.

Power
Very low power:

  • +/- 1.5 VDC, about 40 microwatts/cm^2.

Controller

  • Sophisticated Controller the size of a hearing aid or peanut, affixable to any glasses frame with pressure-sensitive adhesive.
  • Battery operated, very low power.
  • Photodetector incorporated into Controller adjusts darkness/lightness/color to correspond to external light levels in “Auto” mode. Manual override of this allows adjustment to any color/darkness.
  • The microprocessor-based Controller with program written in C++ permits tailoring of sunglasses to specific needs.
  • Extremely inexpensive- cheaper than most optician’s glasses frames.
  • PC- and PDA-interfaceable for further refinement, play, if necessary. (For example to further optimize switching times, lifetime).

Custom Tailoring

  • Custom-tailored size, shape, performance (degree of light/dark contrast), sophistication of Controller and other parameters available.
  • Available as stand-alone sunglasses, as clip-on, or as paste-on.

Very Low Cost

  • About the cost of prescription glasses or good-quality sunglasses.
    Much less than designer sunglasses.
  • Note: This product is still under refinement. prototypes are however available for testing
